Tips & Tricks

Tips and guides

Search farming, items and combat to find the guide you need.

Which items Magic Find affects

Magic Find increases the chance that equipment is Magic, Rare, Set or Unique.

It does not affect rune or gem grades, item quantity, the base type or modifier values. Special Sunder Charm drops follow different rules in Lord of Destruction and Reign of the Warlock.

Choosing Magic Find for rune farming

You do not need to target a Magic Find value when farming only for runes.

Having 0% Magic Find does not penalize rune drops. Instead of removing Magic Find from otherwise useful equipment, improve damage, movement speed and survivability to kill more monsters.

Magic Find and runeword base farming

Lower Magic Find is preferable when looking for white or gray runeword bases.

Higher Magic Find makes the same base more likely to be Magic or better. You can use 0% Magic Find as a starting point, but that value does not increase the number of bases that drop.

Choosing Magic Find for unique and set items

Start with 200–300% Magic Find, then increase it while maintaining your clearing speed.

With starter equipment, 100–200% is enough to begin. These are suggested equipment targets, not limits beyond which drops stop or become worse.

Balancing Magic Find and clear speed

Consider kills and farming runs per hour alongside your Magic Find value.

Effective Magic Find for Uniques is approximately 111% at 200% displayed Magic Find and 136% at 300%. If adding Magic Find substantially increases your run time, compare hourly results against your previous equipment.

Magic Find when switching weapons

Drops use the Magic Find on your equipped gear at the moment of the kill.

You can lower a boss's life first and switch to Magic Find weapons before the final blow. Swapping weapons after an item has dropped does not change its quality.

Magic Find when your mercenary gets the kill

When your mercenary lands the final blow, your Magic Find and the mercenary's Magic Find are added together.

When you make the kill yourself, only your own Magic Find applies. Magic Find equipment on a mercenary is more useful when the mercenary finishes a larger share of kills.

Magic Find in a party

Ordinary monster drops use the Magic Find of the player who lands the final blow.

Party members' Magic Find is neither added together nor averaged. If another player's mercenary finishes the kill, that mercenary's Magic Find is added to its employer's.

Online player counts and item drops

More players reduce the chance of no drop, but do not increase every item's drop chance by the same factor.

When other players are far away or outside your party, ordinary monsters' no-drop adjustment generally changes in groups of 1–2, 3–4, 5–6 and 7–8 players. Nearby party members have a greater effect. Elites with fixed drops and some special drops follow separate rules.

Example of one drop check for an ordinary monster
Players in the online gameNo-drop chanceChance of an item drop
1–2 players62.5%37.5%
3–4 players38.8%61.2%
5–6 players24.1%75.9%
7–8 players14.3%85.7%

This example uses a base NoDrop weight of 100 and a total weight of 60 for all other outcomes. It is neither a universal monster drop rate nor the chance of a particular rune.

Other players are assumed to be far away or outside the party. Nearby party members add another adjustment. Item quality and Magic Find are evaluated separately.

Why monsters sometimes drop no items

Many monsters can select a no-drop outcome during a drop check.

This is called NoDrop. Its probability depends on the monster and player-count conditions. Increasing Magic Find does not reduce NoDrop itself.

Boss quest drops and regular drops

Quest drops use a separate check that is more favorable for higher item quality than ordinary drops.

Quest-drop requirements differ by boss. In Resurrected, Andariel uses quest drops on repeated kills, so there is no need to reproduce the dialogue sequence described in older bug guides.

Drops from normal, champion and unique monsters

Ordinary monsters offer volume, while champions and uniques offer elite drops.

Champions and uniques have higher levels than ordinary monsters and use separate drop rules. Check the individual drop tables for named superuniques and act bosses.

Hunting elites or clearing every monster

Elite hunting suits Unique equipment, while clearing dense areas suits runes and bases.

Killing elites quickly concentrates equipment-quality checks. Builds with strong area damage can also kill ordinary monsters to increase their total chances at runes, bases and charms.

Where to farm high runes

For high runes, compare the Hell Secret Cow Level, Travincal, Arcane Sanctuary and Chaos Sanctuary.

Cows offer density, Travincal offers Council Members and Find Item, and Arcane Sanctuary offers ghost-type monsters. Kill ghosts above walkable ground so their items can drop, and choose routes with short travel and kill times.

The Countess's special rune drops

The Countess checks her separate special rune drop after her ordinary drops.

The highest special rune is Ral in Normal, Io in Nightmare and Ist in Hell. Her non-terrorized Hell ordinary drops can include Lo, but very rarely. This makes her a poor primary target for high runes above Ist.

Where to farm runeword bases

Look for runeword bases in the Hell Secret Cow Level and The Pit.

Cows are good for collecting socket bases in quantity, while The Pit offers high-TC elite bases. For white bases, check whether Larzuk or a Cube recipe can add sockets; for gray bases, check the exact socket count.

Where to farm charms and jewels

Collect charms and jewels in the Secret Cow Level, Travincal and high-level Terror Zones.

Desired modifiers such as skill bonuses have item-level requirements. Keep Grand Charms with an item level of at least 91 separate if you want to reroll the 41–45 Life modifier.

Items to look for in the Secret Cow Level

The Secret Cow Level is a good place to farm runes, socket bases, charms and jewels together.

The key is killing large groups of cows quickly with area damage. The non-terrorized Hell Secret Cow Level has area level 81, so ordinary cows cannot drop every top-tier Unique.

Farming targets from Andariel and Mephisto

Andariel is useful for jewelry, while Mephisto is useful for mid-tier Unique and Set equipment.

Nightmare Andariel can drop The Stone of Jordan; Hell Mephisto can drop Harlequin Crest, Mara's Kaleidoscope and Arachnid Mesh. Non-terrorized bosses have limits on the highest bases in their drop tables.

Farming targets from Diablo and Baal

Use the Chaos Sanctuary route when farming Diablo, and target high-tier equipment and high-level charms when farming Baal.

Non-terrorized Hell Diablo has an equipment TC cap of 84, while Baal's is 87. Grand Charms from either boss can be rerolled for modifiers including 41–45 Life.

Farming Pindleskin, Eldritch and Shenk

These three monsters are quick to reach and suit short, repeated farming routes.

Pindleskin offers high-TC equipment, but outside Terror Zones he cannot drop Tyrael's Might, Arachnid Mesh or Azurewrath. Eldritch and Shenk are convenient to kill together near the Frigid Highlands waypoint.

Drops from monsters, chests and racks

Monsters, chests and racks use different drop tables and item-quality checks.

Do not apply a monster guide's probabilities directly to chests. Racks have restricted weapon and armor types, while superchests depend more on their drop patterns and player-count conditions than on Magic Find.

Repeated farming runs and drop rates

Repeated runs do not build toward a pity counter that guarantees the next drop.

A long stretch without an item does not increase its chance in the next game. The benefit of repeating a familiar route is making more attempts per hour.

Where to farm each Pandemonium Event key

The Countess drops the Key of Terror, the Summoner drops the Key of Hate, and Nihlathak drops the Key of Destruction.

Farm all of them in Hell difficulty. Magic Find does not affect keys. Preparing for 1 Hellfire Torch run requires 3 of each key, or 9 in total.

Where to farm gold

A common gold-farming method is running Hell Travincal with a Barbarian equipped for Extra Gold from Monsters.

After killing Council Members, use Find Item for another chance. Secure Fire Resist, life leech and kill speed before adding more Extra Gold, and collect equipment that sells for a high price.

When to move from Nightmare to Hell farming

Try Hell around level 70 once your main skills, resistances and answers to immunities are ready.

This is a progression recommendation, not an entry requirement. Hell applies -100% to base resistances, so check actual resistances and survivability after changing equipment. Return to Nightmare boss farming if progression stalls.

Balancing farming charms and inventory space

Keep the charms you need for combat and leave space to pick up large equipment.

Prioritize resistances, Life and main-skill charms; you can remove Magic Find charms that provide only a small benefit. Leave a 2×4 space if you want to pick up body armor immediately, and account for the extra storage steps if using the Cube.

Magic Find and the Barbarian's Find Item

Equipment found through Find Item uses your character's Magic Find when the skill is cast.

Your equipment can differ between the kill and the Find Item cast. You can use a Magic Find or Extra Gold weapon swap. A successful Find Item ignores NoDrop for that monster's drop.

Corpses that cannot be used with Find Item

Find Item cannot be used if a corpse disappears or becomes ineligible for the skill.

Watch for shattered corpses, corpses consumed by Corpse Explosion or Revive, and corpses affected by Slain Monsters Rest in Peace. Some monsters, including act bosses, cannot be targeted in the first place.

Repeated drops of the same unique in one game

An ordinary Unique cannot drop again as the same Unique item within the same game.

Different Uniques sharing one base are separate items, and a new game allows another drop. Special quest rewards and Uniques with a duplicate-allowed flag are exceptions, so this rule should not be applied to every Unique item.

What area level means

Area level mainly determines monster levels and the level of dropped item bases.

Ordinary monsters in Nightmare and Hell generally follow area level. Higher values make higher-item-level materials available; area level is not a Magic Find value.

Treasure Classes and possible item drops

A Treasure Class, or TC, is a drop group that determines which bases and item groups a monster can select.

The commonly used term TC 87 refers to the highest weapon and armor base group. Runes, gems, jewelry and special rewards use separate groups, so one number cannot describe every possible drop.

Area level versus Treasure Class

Area level describes monster level, while TC describes the list of possible drops.

Results can differ within the same area because monster types and special drop tables differ. Area level 85 does not mean every monster, boss and chest drops the same items.

Area level, monster level and item level

An ordinary item dropped directly by a monster takes that monster's level as its item level.

Ordinary Nightmare and Hell monsters usually have the same level as their area. Chests, vendors, gambling and Cube recipes determine item level differently. Required Level alone cannot reveal item level.

Champion and unique monster levels

Outside Terror Zones in Nightmare and Hell, champions are area level +2, and ordinary uniques and their minions are +3.

In an area of level 85, those monsters are level 87 and 88 respectively. Normal difficulty, act bosses and special fixed monsters have separate rules, so check the exceptions.

How Act boss levels are determined

Non-terrorized act bosses use fixed monster levels independent of area level.

In Hell, Andariel is level 75, Duriel 88, Mephisto 87, Diablo 94 and Baal 99. A high level does not allow every base to drop; each boss's TC restrictions must also be satisfied.

Area levels on Normal difficulty

Normal-difficulty monsters often use their monster type's base level instead of area level.

Do not apply Nightmare and Hell area-level formulas unchanged. When collecting early socket bases, identify item level from the actual monster and location where the item dropped.

Which items can drop from TC 87

TC 87 includes top-tier bases such as Sacred Armor, Diadems and Caduceuses.

This means those bases are possible drop candidates. A Unique such as Tyrael's Might also requires its Unique quality-level condition, in addition to access to the base's TC.

Base Treasure Class and unique quality level

Being able to drop a base does not mean a monster can drop every Unique using that base.

Sacred Armor is a TC 87 base, and Tyrael's Might requires Unique quality level 87. A high TC with insufficient monster level therefore cannot produce the desired Unique.

Different monster drop pools in high-level areas

Check the levels and drop tables of ordinary monsters, elites and fixed bosses separately.

Even when an ordinary monster in a level 85 area can drop TC 87 bases, higher-level elites are needed for quality-level 87 Uniques. Act bosses and some superuniques use dedicated TCs.

High rune drops in low-level areas

Areas below level 85 can still drop high runes, depending on the monsters' rune TCs.

For example, the Hell Secret Cow Level is area level 81 but can drop up to Zod. Monsters such as the Countess also have separate special rune drops, so check the target's rune pool rather than only the area's number.

Unique and set drops that share a base item

Uniques and Set items have their own quality-level requirements even when they share a base.

For Sacred Armor, Tyrael's Might has quality level 87, while the Set item Immortal King's Soul Cage has quality level 37. They share the base TC requirement, but their item-specific requirements and quality checks differ.

Level 85 farming areas

Choose a non-terrorized level 85 area in Hell difficulty from the list by act.

This list covers non-terrorized areas in Hell difficulty. Distinguish similarly named areas, such as Arachnid Lair and Spider Cavern, and check the dungeon levels listed.

Non-terrorized level 85 areas in Hell
ActAreas and dungeon levels
1Mausoleum / Underground Passage Level 2 / Pit levels 1 and 2
2Stony Tomb levels 1 and 2 / Ancient Tunnels / Maggot Lair Level 3
3Arachnid Lair / Swampy Pit levels 1–3 / Kurast Sewers levels 1 and 2 / Ruined Temple / Disused Fane / Forgotten Reliquary / Forgotten Temple / Disused Reliquary / Ruined Fane
4River of Flame / The Chaos Sanctuary
5Abaddon / Pit of Acheron / Infernal Pit / Drifter Cavern / Icy Cellar / Worldstone Keep levels 1–3 / Throne of Destruction

In Act 3, Spider Cavern and Arachnid Lair are different places.

This list does not include areas raised by Terror Zones or act bosses' fixed levels.

Level 85 areas and higher-level farming areas

Higher levels help with high-level modifier bases and experience, but do not increase every drop chance uniformly.

Elites in level 85 areas can drop nearly all ordinary-drop Uniques from the existing equipment pool. Higher levels, such as those in Terror Zones, also expand the Unique requirements ordinary monsters can meet and the item-level range of charms.

How Terror Zones work

Terror Zones raise designated monsters' levels, experience rewards and possible drop range.

The natural rotation currently changes every 30 minutes. Reign of the Warlock adds rules such as selecting an act with Worldstone Shards and encountering Heralds. Distinguish these from Lord of Destruction's Sunder Charm drop rules.

Unlocking Terror Zones

Defeating Baal with that character in a difficulty unlocks the ability to create Terror Zones in that difficulty.

Normal, Nightmare and Hell must each be unlocked separately. Online, other characters can join a Terror Zone game created by someone who has unlocked it. This feature is unavailable in Classic mode.

How Terror Zone levels are determined

Online Terror Zones normally use the level of the character who created the game.

Standard monsters receive +2, champions +4 and uniques +5 up to the difficulty cap, without reducing their original levels. If the creator leaves, a new reference player is selected at the next Terror Zone rotation.

Terror Zone level caps by difficulty

The standard, champion and unique monster caps are 45, 47 and 48 in Normal; 71, 73 and 74 in Nightmare; and 96, 98 and 99 in Hell.

These caps limit the Terror Zone adjustment. They do not lower the original level of an act boss or another monster that is already above the cap.

Terror Zone adjustment caps
DifficultyStandardChampionUnique
Normal454748
Nightmare717374
Hell969899

Monsters that originally have a higher level are not reduced to these caps.

Leveling up during a Terror Zone game

After leveling up, check the displayed Terror Zone level and create a new game to refresh the reference level.

There is insufficient evidence to give one definitive current-patch update rule for existing and newly spawned monsters immediately after a level-up. When collecting materials of a target item level, create a new game, then check the displayed terror level and the monster type.

Normal, elite and boss levels in Terror Zones

Standard monsters, champions, uniques and act bosses can have different levels within the same Terror Zone.

In a Hell game created by a level 85 character, the basic calculation gives level 87 standard monsters, 89 champions and 90 uniques. Diablo's original level 94 and Baal's 99 are not lowered to those values.

Treasure Class changes in Terror Zones

Terror Zones expand drop TCs in stages to match the increased monster level.

Not every monster gains TC 87 immediately upon becoming terrorized. Ordinary monsters and special bosses have different TC upgrade thresholds, so check the requirements for your target base.

Drop pools when low-level areas become terrorized

A low-level area can provide high-tier items when it becomes a sufficiently high-level Terror Zone.

What matters is the actual terrorized monster level and upgraded TC, rather than the original area level. A low-level game creator may limit the expanded drop range.

Which monsters and difficulties drop Sunder Charms

Lord of Destruction uses Hell Terror Zone elites, while Reign of the Warlock has separate Latent Sunder Charm rules.

Existing Sunder Charms can drop from champions, uniques, superuniques and bosses. Reign of the Warlock 3.3 distinguishes ordinary Hell Magic Find drops from Herald drops, and raises the minimum Latent Sunder Charm drop level to 75.

Magic Find and Sunder Charm drops

Magic Find does not affect the special drop of existing Sunder Charms, but does affect ordinary Latent Sunder Charm drops.

The extra Herald drop opportunity in Reign of the Warlock is separate from the ordinary Magic Find route. In 3.3, the Magic Find drop rate was reduced while the Herald rate remained unchanged, so do not apply one Magic Find formula to every Sunder Charm.

Sunder Charm drops outside Terror Zones

Existing Sunder Charms cannot drop outside Terror Zones, but Reign of the Warlock's Latent Sunder Charms can.

The ordinary Magic Find route in Reign of the Warlock 3.3 requires Hell difficulty and the minimum drop level. Consider the special Herald route and Lord of Destruction rules separately.

Boss drop pools in Terror Zones

When a terrorized boss's dedicated TC upgrades, it can drop top-tier bases normally outside its pool.

Andariel and Mephisto in particular gain a much wider drop range at sufficiently high terror levels. Older probability tables may not reflect Reign of the Warlock's boss drop-table changes.

Farming targets for different Terror Zones

Cows suit runes and bases, the Catacombs suit boss equipment, and dense areas suit experience and materials.

Compare density and travel routes in Tal Rasha's Tombs, Chaos Sanctuary and Worldstone Keep. For Reign of the Warlock Heralds, consider continuing to clear a large terrorized area within the same game.

Terror Zones versus regular level 85 areas

Level 85 areas offer consistent repeat farming, while Terror Zones offer higher-level materials and experience.

If a Terror Zone is far away or has unfavorable immunities, a familiar level 85 area may give better hourly results. Among areas that meet your target item's requirements, choose by travel time and clear speed.

Experience efficiency in Terror Zones

At high character levels, high-monster-level Terror Zones help reduce experience losses from level differences.

They compensate for experience reductions caused by outleveling ordinary low-level monsters. Even a high-player-count game gives poor experience per hour if kills are too slow or deaths are frequent.

Checking the online Terror Zone rotation

Online Terror Zones currently rotate naturally every 30 minutes.

Check chat notifications, purple waypoint markers and the map for the current area. The 30-minute rotation also applies to Lord of Destruction. Treat areas chosen with Reign of the Warlock Worldstone Shards separately from the natural rotation.

Item qualities and colors

White items are Normal, blue are Magic, yellow are Rare, green are Set, gold are Unique, and orange are Crafted.

Normal-quality socketed or ethereal items have gray names. Ethereal items of Magic or higher quality retain their quality color, so read the description rather than relying only on a gray name.

How ethereal items work

Ethereal items have 50% higher base weapon damage or defense but cannot be repaired by ordinary means.

Strength and Dexterity requirements are each reduced by 10. For personal use, look for a solution such as Indestructible or Repairs Durability. Also check Replenishes Quantity on throwing weapons that consume their stack.

Ethereal durability on mercenary equipment

Mercenary equipment does not lose durability, making ethereal gear advantageous.

The mercenary can use the increased base damage or defense without durability loss. The weapon type and Strength, Dexterity and Required Level restrictions must still be met.

Enhanced damage and defense on superior bases

Superior bases can have up to 15% Enhanced Damage or Enhanced Defense; choose according to your actual needs.

Increased base damage helps physical weapons, while skill bonuses may matter more for caster weapons. Superior armor can have much higher repair costs, so weigh the defense difference against upkeep.

Which items can become runewords

Runewords can only be made in white or gray bases of the specified type.

They cannot be made in blue Magic, yellow Rare, Set, Unique or Crafted items. Check the base type, socket count, rune order and availability in your expansion and game mode first.

Matching a runeword's socket count

The base's total socket count must exactly match the number of runes in the runeword.

A 3-rune runeword will not work in a 4-socket base with one socket left empty. Similar weapon names, such as spears and polearms, can belong to different allowed types, so check the individual runeword.

What to do after inserting runes in the wrong order

Incorrectly inserted runes cannot be recovered; empty the sockets and make the runeword again.

Put a Hel Rune, a Scroll of Town Portal and the item in the Cube. All inserted runes are destroyed while the base and its socket count remain, so calculate the cost before remaking it.

Removing runes, gems and jewels from sockets

A Hel Rune, a Scroll of Town Portal and the socketed item remove all socket contents.

The removed runes, gems and jewels are destroyed and cannot be recovered. The socket count remains. A Tome of Town Portal does not work in place of the scroll.

Base skill bonuses retained by runewords

Class-specific skill bonuses and inherent modifiers on the base remain after making a runeword.

Examples include individual Sorceress skills on staves and All Resistances on Paladin shields. These combine with the runeword's effects, so base modifiers matter alongside socket count.

Normal, exceptional and elite bases

Within a base family, Normal → Exceptional → Elite tiers increase base performance and requirements.

Weapon base damage and armor defense change between tiers. Required Strength, Dexterity and Level also rise, so a higher-tier base is not automatically better for every character.

Unique and rare item upgrade recipes

Upgrading raises the item's base by one tier while retaining its modifiers.

Place the target item in the Horadric Cube together with the ingredients below. Upgrades cannot be reversed, so check the higher requirements and actual damage or defense benefit first.

Modifiers and sockets are retained. Strength, Dexterity and level requirements may increase. Armor also includes helms, shields, gloves, boots and belts.

How Larzuk's socket count is determined

Larzuk gives Normal and Superior bases the maximum sockets permitted by their item level.

Magic items receive 1–2 sockets subject to the base limit; Rare, Set, Unique and Crafted items receive 1. The reward cannot be used on an already socketed item. Even white bases can have different maximum sockets depending on their origin.

Cube socket recipes and socket-count chances

Socket recipes for white, normal-quality bases roll 1–6, then clamp results above the item's maximum to that maximum.

If the roll from 1–6 exceeds the permitted maximum, the result is capped at that many sockets. These recipes use unsocketed, normal-quality bases. The maximum depends on the base and item level.

21/6, approximately 16.7%
31/6, approximately 16.7%
43/6 = 50%

The 4-socket result combines rolls of 4, 5 and 6, all capped at 4. The maximum is determined by the base and item level.

Cube socketing superior and ethereal items

Superior bases cannot use the socket Cube recipes, but Normal-quality ethereal bases can.

Low-quality and already socketed bases are also ineligible. In Resurrected, do not expect the old ethereal armor bug that applied an extra defense increase when adding sockets through the Cube.

How to check item level

The default item tooltip does not show item level, so infer it from how the item was obtained.

Monster drops use monster level, while gambling uses a range from character level -5 to +4. An item of unknown origin cannot have its exact item level determined from Required Level alone.

Required level versus item level

Required Level limits who can equip an item; item level is a hidden value used for generated modifiers and recipes.

Items with the same Required Level can have different item levels. For socket, crafting and charm-reroll requirements, check item level and the base rather than Required Level.

Prefixes, suffixes and affix counts on magic and rare items

Magic items allow up to 1 affix of each type (prefix and suffix), while Rare items allow up to 6 in total.

Rare items allow up to 3 affixes of each type, and cannot select the same modifier group twice. Class-specific inherent modifiers and affixes that give several values mean tooltip lines are not the same as affix count.

Magic and rare item affix limits

Rare items offer more modifier combinations, while Magic items have higher caps for some modifiers.

For example, Magic jewels can reach 40% Enhanced Damage, while Rare jewels cap at 30%; the 15% Increased Attack Speed affix is available on Magic jewels. Decide what to keep by the desired caps and combinations rather than color alone.

Crafted item types and their uses

The 4 crafting families are Hit Power, Blood, Caster and Safety, each with different fixed modifiers.

Caster recipes support casting and Mana; Blood supports life leech and Life; Hit Power supports attacks with effects such as Knockback; Safety supports defense and damage reduction. Each family and equipment slot has a specific base, rune and Perfect Gem recipe.

Fixed and random modifiers on crafted items

Crafted items receive fixed modifiers plus 1–4 random affixes.

A resulting item level of at least 71 guarantees 4 random affixes. The original affixes of the Magic base and the jewel's modifiers are not carried over unchanged.

Character level and item level for crafting

A Crafted item's level is half the character level rounded down plus half the input item's level rounded down.

For example, a level 93 character and item-level 88 base produce 46+44=90. Different desired modifiers have different resulting-level requirements; a high character level alone does not guarantee a modifier.

Choosing materials for Faster Cast Rate amulets

Make a Caster amulet with a Magic amulet, a Ral Rune, a Perfect Amethyst and any jewel.

The fixed 5–10% Faster Cast Rate can combine with a random 10% Faster Cast Rate affix for up to 20%. A character of level 93 or higher crafting amulets they gambled themselves always meets the level requirement for +2 class skills, but the actual modifiers remain random.

Cube recipes for rerolling charms

Reroll a Magic charm's modifiers with the charm and 3 Perfect Gems.

Perfect Skulls are included, and gem types may be mixed. The charm's size and item level remain unchanged, but its old modifiers disappear, so the result can be worse.

Where to find charms worth rerolling

Use an item-level 91 or higher Grand Charm to target a skill bonus with 41–45 Life.

Keep drops from non-terrorized Hell Diablo, Nihlathak or Baal, or Terror Zone monsters whose actual monster level is at least 91. A Grand Charm needs an item level of at least 50 if you only want a skill bonus.

Rerolling magic and rare items

Rerolling a Magic item with 3 Perfect Gems preserves item level, while the Rare-item skull recipe changes it.

Rerolling a Rare item with 6 Perfect Skulls gives an item level of ⌊character level×0.4⌋+⌊input item level×0.4⌋. Repeated rerolls can lower the level, and the recipe cannot be used on large Rare items that do not fit alongside the ingredients in the Cube.

Small Charm modifier combinations worth keeping

For Small Charms, look first at Maximum Damage/Attack Rating/Life, All Resistances/Life, and Magic Find combinations.

Representative targets are 3 Maximum Damage, 20 Attack Rating and 20 Life; 5 All Resistances and 20 Life; or 7% Magic Find. These are individual caps, and partial matches can still be useful. A combination of 5% Faster Hit Recovery and resistances can also be worth keeping.

Grand Charm modifier combinations worth keeping

For Grand Charms, start by keeping a main skill-tab bonus combined with Life or Faster Hit Recovery.

A +1 bonus to one class skill tab can pair with up to 45 Life or 12% Faster Hit Recovery. Do not confuse skill bonuses with Faster Cast Rate. Even lower rolls can be useful when the skill tab suits your build.

Jewel modifiers and values worth keeping

Notable Magic jewels include 15% Increased Attack Speed with 40% Enhanced Damage, or resistance and Reduced Requirements combinations.

For Rare jewels, useful modifiers appearing together matter; Enhanced Damage caps at 30%. Jewels with the same name can have different values, so inspect Increased Attack Speed, resistances and Minimum/Maximum Damage directly.

Rune and gem upgrade recipes

Upgrade gems with 3 of the same type and grade; upgrade runes with 3 or 2 identical runes and the specified gem, depending on the rune.

El through Ort require only 3 identical runes. Thul and above require the specified gem. Starting at Pul, use 2 identical runes. Zod is the highest rune and has no further recipe. The table lists every rune upgrade.

Use 1 of each listed additional gem. A gem without a grade prefix, such as Topaz, means normal grade.

Do not confuse Flawless with Perfect. Combine 3 gems of the same type and grade to upgrade them by one grade.

Cube recipes for repairs and skill charges

Repair weapons with Ort and armor with Ral; adding a gem also restores skill charges.

A weapon plus Ort repairs durability; adding a Chipped Gem also restores skill charges. Armor plus Ral repairs durability, and adding a Flawed Gem restores charges as well. These recipes cannot restore ethereal durability.

Strength and Dexterity for equipment requirements

Start by assigning enough Strength and Dexterity to equip your final gear.

Include bonuses from Hellfire Torch, Annihilus and other equipment when calculating what is missing. Builds targeting 75% blocking or physical attacks use more Dexterity, so their allocation differs from that of a typical caster.

Choosing Vitality and Energy investment

For a typical build, prioritize Vitality after meeting equipment requirements.

If Mana is scarce early on, investing some Energy and adjusting it later with a respec is reasonable. Builds that use Mana defensively, such as Energy Shield builds, should follow their specific allocation.

Reaching 75% chance to block

Equip your shield, then adjust Dexterity until the character screen shows a final 75% Chance to Block.

The calculation includes shield blocking, Dexterity, character level and bonuses such as Holy Shield. Leveling up can reduce blocking at the same Dexterity, and running reduces blocking effectiveness to 1/3.

Cast speed versus attack speed

Faster Cast Rate speeds casting animations, while Increased Attack Speed speeds attack animations.

Check Faster Cast Rate for Teleport and Blessed Hammer; check Increased Attack Speed for ordinary attacks, most weapon attacks and Assassin trap laying. Increasing Faster Cast Rate does not reduce a skill's casting delay by the same amount.

Faster Cast Rate breakpoints

Faster Cast Rate reduces casting frames by one step when a breakpoint is reached.

Common higher Sorceress breakpoints are 63→105→200% for ordinary casting and 78→117→194% for Lightning and Chain Lightning. Paladins often target 75→125% for ordinary casting. Use the table appropriate to the class, shapeshift and skill.

Common higher Faster Cast Rate breakpoints
Class and animationFaster Cast Rate
Sorceress ordinary casting and Teleport63 / 105 / 200%
Sorceress Lightning and Chain Lightning78 / 117 / 194%
Paladin ordinary casting75 / 125%

These are common target breakpoints, not a complete breakpoint table. Check the relevant table for shapeshifts and special animations.

When Faster Hit Recovery matters

Faster Hit Recovery reduces the time spent in the hit-recovery animation.

It helps when repeated heavy hits or stuns interrupt your actions. It does not speed up blocking animations or casting itself, so check the recovery breakpoints for your class and shapeshift.

Attack speed on weapons and other equipment

Attack-speed calculations include weapon IAS, equipment IAS, skill bonuses and slowing effects.

Most attacks also count IAS on other equipment slots, but dual-wielding, Whirlwind and shapeshift attacks can use different calculations. Use an attack-speed calculator for the particular skill and current Resurrected version to check the final breakpoint.

Attack speed differences between weapon types

Even with identical IAS modifiers, attack speed differs with the base weapon speed and class animation.

A lower weapon base-speed number is generally faster. Changing weapon types, such as one-handed weapons, two-handed weapons, spears or bows, or changing skills alters breakpoints. Do not assume equal speed just because both items show 20% IAS.

Which attacks use Attack Rating

Attack Rating is used in hit checks for ordinary attacks and many physical weapon attacks.

Attack Rating, enemy Defense and both combatants' levels affect the result. Some skills, including spells and Smite, do not use an Attack Rating check, so not every attack requires Attack Rating.

Why attacks miss despite high Attack Rating

The ordinary Attack Rating hit check has a maximum 95% chance to hit.

The character screen gives an estimate for a recent target, and the value changes with the enemy. Even after passing the hit check, blocking, dodging, position or range can prevent damage.

Defense versus damage reduction

Defense increases the chance that enemy attacks miss; damage reduction reduces damage after a hit.

More Defense does not reduce the damage value of a physical hit that lands. Spells without an Attack Rating check cannot be avoided through Defense, so resistances, damage reduction and Life also matter.

Defense and blocking while walking or running

While running, Defense no longer lets you avoid attacks, and Chance to Block falls to 1/3 of its normal value.

Even a character with 75% final blocking only blocks 25% while running. Walking or standing still restores normal Defense and blocking, so check your run/walk state in melee combat.

Resistances for entering Hell difficulty

In Hell, secure Fire and Lightning Resist first and aim for a final 75%.

The basic difficulty penalty is -100%, so a final 75% requires a total of +175%. Completing all Anya rewards supplies +30% of that. Also account for Cold and Poison Resist and curses that lower resistances.

Resistance versus maximum resistance

Resistance increases raise the current value, while Maximum Resistance increases raise the default 75% cap.

Having +5% Maximum Fire Resist only helps if your actual Fire Resist reaches 80%. The final elemental maximum resistance cap is 95%, and extra resistance above the displayed cap helps against enemy resistance reduction.

How elemental absorb handles damage

Elemental absorb prevents some remaining damage of that element after resistances and restores Life.

Percentage absorb is calculated before flat absorb, and percentage absorb caps at 40%. Healing is applied before the remaining damage, so a character already at full Life cannot receive all of the healing.

Flat and percentage damage reduction

Flat damage reduction removes a fixed amount, while percentage damage reduction removes a share of the remaining physical damage.

Flat reduction helps against frequent small physical hits, while percentage reduction helps against large physical hits. Player percentage physical damage reduction caps at 50%. The integer Magic Damage Reduced modifier is separate.

Poison Resistance versus Poison Length Reduced

Poison Resist reduces poison damage rate, while Poison Length Reduced shortens the time you remain poisoned.

Using both reduces total poison damage further. Poison Length Reduced also has difficulty penalties and a cap. Use an Antidote Potion to remove poison immediately after being poisoned.

Elemental skill damage versus enemy resistance reduction

The higher the enemy's resistance, the more enemy resistance reduction can increase actual damage.

Reducing enemy resistance from 75% to 50% increases damage dealt from 25%→50%, a 2-fold increase. Elemental skill damage bonuses sometimes add to mastery instead of multiplying final damage, so check how the specific skill applies them.

Breaking immunities with Conviction and Lower Resist

Conviction attempts to break Fire, Cold and Lightning immunities; Lower Resist also attempts to break Poison immunity.

Against an originally immune enemy, resistance reduction works at 1/5 effectiveness, and resistance must fall below 100% to break immunity. Enemy elemental resistance reduction on equipment cannot break an immunity by itself.

Sunder Charms and additional resistance reduction

After an elemental Sunder Charm sets an immunity to 95% resistance, use additional resistance reduction to improve damage.

Enemy elemental resistance reduction on equipment applies to the sundered target. Conviction, Lower Resist and Cold Mastery work at 1/5 effectiveness against that formerly immune target. Use equipment to compensate for the Sunder Charm's penalty to your own resistance.

Dealing with physical-immune monsters

Try breaking Physical immunity with Amplify Damage or Decrepify, or bypass it with Magic or elemental damage.

When breaking an original Physical immunity, a curse's resistance reduction also works at only 1/5 effectiveness, so very high Physical resistance may remain unbroken. Prepare an answer suited to your build, such as Berserk, Vengeance or a secondary elemental attack.

When Life and Mana Stolen per Hit do not work

Life and Mana leech generally scale with physical weapon damage actually dealt.

Ordinary leech does not work from elemental or spell damage, and some targets such as skeletons cannot be leeched. Account for reduced Nightmare and Hell efficiency and the enemy's drain effectiveness. Distinguish Smite healing through Life Tap from ordinary leech.

Solving mana shortages while farming

Combine Insight, Mana regeneration, Mana After Each Kill and Mana leech to suit your build.

Spell builds can use potions, Insight, maximum Mana and regeneration; physical attack builds can also leech Mana from actual damage. Keep Rejuvenation Potions available for Mana Burn and enemies that cannot be leeched.

Crushing Blow in boss fights

Crushing Blow removes part of the enemy's current Life, making it especially strong early in fights against high-Life bosses.

For melee attacks, it removes 1/4 against ordinary monsters and 1/8 against bosses and superuniques; ranged attacks halve those fractions again. Enemy Physical resistance and player-count scaling affect it. As enemy Life falls, ordinary damage becomes more important for finishing the kill.

Critical Strike and Deadly Strike interaction

Critical Strike and Deadly Strike both check for 2-fold physical damage.

They do not both apply to one attack to produce 4-fold damage. Their chances are not simply added; instead, the other effect has a chance to succeed if the first fails.

How Open Wounds works

Open Wounds causes bleeding for about 8 seconds and interferes with monster Life regeneration.

It acts separately from the current attack's physical damage and is affected by factors such as character level. It helps against fast-regenerating enemies such as Uber bosses, but repeated triggers do not simply stack the bleeding damage.

Equipment skill bonuses and synergies

Most damage synergies count only skill points you have directly invested.

Equipment bonuses to all skills or skill tabs increase the level of the skill being used, but do not increase ordinary hard-point synergies. Check individual skill rules for exceptions such as Prayer-related healing.

How identical auras stack

Matching auras supplied by equipment on the same character can have their levels added together.

For example, level 15+15 Holy Shock from a Dream helm and Dream shield becomes level 30. The same aura actively selected by the character, or supplied by another character or mercenary, is not simply added; generally, the stronger effect applies.

Choosing a mercenary for your class and build

Choose a mercenary for the function you need: Insight for Mana, Might for melee damage, or Holy Freeze for control.

Act 2 offers auras and polearm runewords; Act 1 offers bow runewords and ranged support; Act 5 offers melee damage and on-weapon chance-to-cast effects. One mercenary is not always the correct choice for a particular class.

Equipment for mercenary survival

Prioritize resistances, life leech, Increased Attack Speed and physical damage reduction for mercenary survival.

Life leech requires the mercenary to deal actual physical damage, so the weapon matters too. Use ethereal weapons and armor, and keep the mercenary alive with potions and repositioning against poison, burst damage and enemies that cannot be leeched.

Quests that reward skill points

Den of Evil gives +1, Radament's Lair +1, and The Fallen Angel +2 skill points, for 4 points per difficulty.

Completing all of them in Normal, Nightmare and Hell gives 12 points in total. Use Radament's Book of Skill to receive its reward; claim the others from Akara and Tyrael.

Quests that reward stat points and life

Lam Esen's Tome gives +5 stat points, and The Golden Bird gives +20 Life in each difficulty.

Completing all three difficulties gives 15 stat points and 60 Life in total. The Golden Bird reward only applies after you use the Potion of Life from Alkor.

Quests that reward permanent resistances

Anya's Prison of Ice quest reward grants +10 All Resistances per difficulty.

The total across all three difficulties is +30, and you must use Malah's Scroll of Resistance to apply it. Do not confuse the original game's old post-death Anya resistance bug with current Resurrected rules.

Akara's respec allowance and requirements

Completing Den of Evil grants 1 respec from Akara per difficulty, for 3 in total.

A respec refunds both stat and skill points. Afterward, first restore equipment requirements and required prerequisite skills. For further respecs, use a Token of Absolution.

Making and using a Token of Absolution

Combine the 4 different essences dropped by Hell bosses in the Cube to make a Token of Absolution.

Andariel and Duriel: Twisted Essence of Suffering; Mephisto: Charged Essence of Hatred; Diablo: Burning Essence of Terror; Baal: Festering Essence of Destruction. Combine 1 of each, then use the resulting token to reset stats and skills.

Choosing items for Larzuk's socket quest

Prioritize adding 1 socket to a Unique or Set item, or socketing a base whose maximum matches your target.

Common uses include a helm such as Harlequin Crest, an endgame Unique weapon, or a white base with the desired maximum sockets. If you need 4 sockets but the base's maximum is 6, it receives 6, so check its origin and socket table first.

Choosing items for Charsi's imbue quest

An unsocketed white Diadem or a base suitable for a Rare item in your build is a common imbue choice.

Charsi generates a new Rare item rather than preserving existing magical modifiers. Ethereal bases are eligible. Diadems work well even at low character levels because of the base's favorable affix-level properties.

Hellforge rune and gem rewards

Rune rewards range from El Rune to Amn Rune in Normal, Sol Rune to Um Rune in Nightmare, and Hel Rune to Gul Rune in Hell.

Each difficulty chooses one rune with equal probability from its pool of 11 runes and also awards 4 gems. Completing the quest for several players at once does not award one rune per player. Complete it separately if each player's rune reward is your goal.

Hellforge rune rewards
DifficultyRangeHighest rune
NormalEl Rune–Amn RuneAmn Rune

HellHel Rune–Gul RuneGul Rune

All 11 runes in each range are equally likely. Each reward contains 1 rune.

Finding the true Tomb of Tal Rasha

After defeating the Summoner, the tomb with the symbol shown in your quest log is Tal Rasha's true tomb.

Compare the symbols at tomb entrances in the Canyon of the Magi. If the quest is already complete and the symbol is not shown, find the seventh symbol missing from the 6 floating symbols around the Summoner.

Required quests for Act III progression

Collect Khalim's Eye, Brain, Heart and Flail to destroy the Council's Compelling Orb.

The Eye is in Spider Cavern, the Brain in Flayer Dungeon Level 3, the Heart in Kurast Sewers Level 2, and the Flail drops from the Travincal Council. Cube Khalim's Will and smash the orb. You can no longer simply kill the Council and skip ahead through the Durance of Hate waypoint as in older guides.

What to do when a quest item is lost

Check the quest log, then return to the area containing the missing quest material.

If parts may still be present, check the Cube, personal stash and corpse inventory. Quest items disappearing after completion is normal. Distinguish a completed quest that no longer drops materials from the situation of a new character whose quest is incomplete.

Level requirements for the Ancients and Baal quests

The Ancients quest requires at least level 20 in Normal, 40 in Nightmare and 60 in Hell.

In normal progression, you complete the Ancients before continuing to Baal's quest. These values are progression requirements, not an identical level gate applied directly to every entry into a Baal game.

Opening the Secret Cow Level

After completing Baal in that difficulty, cube Wirt's Leg with a Tome of Town Portal in Act 1.

Obtain the leg from Wirt's corpse in Tristram in the same difficulty. The number of scrolls in the tome does not affect cow count or drops. These conditions apply to Resurrected expansion play.

Returning to the Secret Cow Level after killing the Cow King

In Resurrected, killing the Cow King does not prevent you from reopening the Secret Cow Level in later games.

The original game's Cow King restriction does not apply. Collect another leg and Tome of Town Portal in a new game.

Party quest completion and shared rewards

Party quest completion requires the game's quest availability and the individual quest's party and location conditions.

First check the quest log for a message that the quest cannot be completed. Even when a kill objective is shared, each player must speak to the reward NPC. Some rewards, such as the Hellforge rune, are not awarded independently to every player.

The Pandemonium Event sequence

Collect 3 sets of the 3 key types, then obtain 3 organs to open Uber Tristram.

In Hell Harrogath, cube 1 of each key to open all 3 mini-Uber portals in the same game. Combine 1 of each organ from Lilith, Uber Duriel and Uber Izual to open the final portal. Defeat the 3 Uber bosses to obtain a Hellfire Torch.

How Uber Diablo spawns online

Online Diablo Clone spawns according to Stone of Jordan sales progress for the same server region and game mode.

Check the relevant Ladder/non-Ladder and Softcore/Hardcore progress and wait in a Hell game. On PC, /uberdiablo shows the status. This is the Annihilus event, separate from Uber Diablo in the Hellfire Torch quest.

Finding Uber Diablo's spawn location

When the spawn notification appears, travel to a superunique monster location that has not yet spawned.

Easy-to-find targets such as Rakanishu or Eldritch are commonly used. Avoid areas where the target monster has already spawned. Defeating Diablo Clone awards an Annihilus Small Charm.

Experience and gold lost on death

Softcore characters lose 5% of the experience required for the next level on death in Nightmare, and 10% in Hell.

You cannot lose a level, and recovering your corpse where you died returns 75% of the lost experience. The online gold penalty is your character level as a percentage of carried plus personal-stash gold, capped at 20%. Remaining carried gold drops on the ground after the penalty; Shared Stash gold is excluded.

Keeping equipment when multiple corpses exist

Online, if several corpses contain equipment, only one is preserved for the next game.

The selection uses the total in-game gold value of the items, not their trading value. Avoid equipping other gear and dying again while recovering your corpse. Before leaving, check that you have recovered all your original equipment.

Characters and stash after a ladder season ends

Ladder characters move to their corresponding non-Ladder mode, while Shared Stash items remain in withdraw-only past-season tabs.

Retrieve those items during the next season; the tabs may be overwritten when the following season ends. Check Softcore/Hardcore and game-era divisions, and move important items into your current stash first.

Identifying items with Deckard Cain

Cain's Identify Items option identifies all unidentified items you are carrying at once.

You do not need to use individual Identify Scrolls. First take out items stored only in your stash. Rescuing Cain and using him in town makes identification and selling faster during repeated farming runs.

How mercenary resurrection costs are determined

Mercenary resurrection costs increase with mercenary level, up to 50,000 gold.

If you are short of carried gold, withdraw some from the stash. If the mercenary dies frequently, improve resistances, life leech, weapon performance and positioning instead of repeatedly paying resurrection costs.

Life and mana potion recovery

Ordinary potions restore Life or Mana over time; Rejuvenation Potions restore them instantly.

Healing and Mana Potion recovery amounts depend on potion grade and class. Rejuvenation Potions instantly restore 35% of maximum Life and Mana, while Full Rejuvenation Potions restore 100%. Prioritize instant recovery when sudden death is a risk.

Using Antidote and Thawing Potions

Antidote Potions remove poison, and Thawing Potions remove cold effects; each temporarily raises the matching resistance.

Each gives +50% Poison or Cold Resist and +10% to that Maximum Resistance for 30 seconds. Drinking more adds duration rather than stacking resistance without limit. They can also be given to mercenaries.

Buying potions quickly and filling the belt

On PC, Shift+right-click a vendor potion to fill empty belt slots quickly.

Shift+left-click a potion in your inventory to move it into the belt. Set the belt capacity and potion arrangement first to make replenishing the same types easier.

The shortcut for giving potions to your mercenary

With default PC controls, press Shift+1–4 to give the potion in that belt slot to your mercenary.

You can also drag a potion onto the mercenary portrait. Use a Full Rejuvenation Potion when Life drops sharply. On consoles, check the mercenary-potion button combination for that platform.

Quick Cast and skill hotkeys

With Quick Cast enabled, pressing a skill hotkey immediately uses that skill.

Enable Quick Cast and the Active Skill Bindings display, then put Teleport, main attacks and buffs on nearby keys. This differs from the old controls that only select a skill, so test buffs and weapon swapping as well.

Moving items through the shared stash

Characters in the same game mode can transfer items through the Shared Stash.

Sharing is separated by online Softcore/Hardcore, Ladder/non-Ladder and game era. Reign of the Warlock includes dedicated storage for materials, runes, gems and consumables; use the corresponding tabs.

Avoiding item-swap trading scams

If the other player puts an item back into the trade window, recheck its modifiers, base and sockets from the beginning.

Watch for substitutions with a cheaper lookalike or lower-rolled item. If the trade window is reopened or its contents change, verify the name, ethereal status, important modifiers and quantity before completing the trade.

Offline and online play compared

Offline play uses characters saved on your device; online play uses server characters for multiplayer and trading.

Offline offers persistent maps, player-count settings and mods, but cannot share characters or items with online play. Playing alone in an online game is different from offline single-player.

Internet and authentication requirements for offline play

The PC Battle.net version requires initial authentication and periodic online authentication afterward.

Blizzard's guidance allows offline play for up to 30 days after the last online authentication. When that period expires, reconnect to the internet, launch the game and authenticate again. Follow the relevant guidance for other platforms and launchers.

Whether online characters can be converted to offline

There is no official feature to convert an online character into an offline character.

Online characters are stored on the server and offline characters locally, so they are separate. Start a new offline character. Characters created with external editors also cannot be uploaded to online play.

Moving offline characters to another computer

To move saves between PCs, close the game and copy the offline save folder to the new PC.

Copy the whole folder, including character .d2s files and Shared Stash files. Match the game version, expansion and mod environment, and back up existing saves on the destination PC first. Ordinary online cross-progression does not transfer these saves automatically.

Where PC offline character saves are stored

The default Windows path is C:\Users\Username\Saved Games\Diablo II Resurrected.

Enter %USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\Diablo II Resurrected in File Explorer. For Windows accounts with a relocated save location or for mods, check the actual Saved Games location and the mod subfolder.

Backing up and restoring character saves

Fully close the game, then copy the save folder into dated backups.

Before restoring, keep a separate copy of the current folder, then restore a backup from the same version. Replacing only the character can leave the Shared Stash at a different point in time, so manage them together and avoid copying while the game is running.

Backing up the offline shared stash

Back up SharedStash .d2i files alongside character files.

Files or folders may be separated by Softcore/Hardcore, game era or mod. Rather than selecting one assumed filename, close the game and copy the entire save folder actually in use.

The shared stash after a Hardcore character dies

After an offline Hardcore character dies, other Hardcore characters can still use the items in the Shared Stash.

The dead character's equipped items, inventory and personal stash cannot be recovered through ordinary play. Put spare equipment and important materials into shared tabs in preparation for a possible death.

Moving offline characters between PC and console

Offline characters do not synchronize between PC and consoles through official cross-progression.

Cross-progression applies to Battle.net online characters. There is also no official feature for copying PC save files onto a console, so manage console backups within the platform's supported options.

Ladder runewords available offline

Resurrected offline play supports the original Ladder runewords and newer runewords that explicitly support offline play.

Spirit, Insight and Grief, as well as additions such as Mosaic from patch 2.6, officially support offline play. For Reign of the Warlock-exclusive runewords and revised versions, check the ingredients and availability for that game era and patch, separately from older expansion recipes.

Obtaining Sunder Charms offline

Sunder Charms are available offline, but Lord of Destruction and Reign of the Warlock follow different rules.

In Lord of Destruction, the targets are champions, uniques, superuniques and bosses in Hell Terror Zones. In Reign of the Warlock 3.3, check the Hell Magic Find and Herald routes for Latent Sunder Charms and their minimum drop level of 75.

Enabling offline Terror Zones

After that character completes Baal in the relevant difficulty, enable the offline Terror Zones option.

Enable it in the character-selection settings, then check the terrorized-area indicator in the game. Unlocks are difficulty-specific. If a mod changes this rule or the area list, follow the mod's documentation.

The offline Terror Zone schedule

Offline Terror Zones currently change every 30 minutes according to your device's time.

They use a fixed schedule separate from online play. Do not apply an old 1-hour schedule unchanged to the current version. Match an external schedule's patch and time zone, then confirm against the in-game display.

Computer clock changes and Terror Zones

Changing the system time in PC offline play can change the time-linked Terror Zone.

Close the game and back up the save folder first. Distinguish changing the time zone from changing the clock time itself. Reign of the Warlock also lets you terrorize a chosen act with Worldstone Shards.

Changing the offline player count

On PC, enter /players 1–8 in chat, or use the player-count slider in the offline settings.

For example, enter /players 7. This adjusts difficulty and drops without creating actual party members. The same command cannot increase the player count in an online game.

Offline player settings: monsters, experience and drops

Higher player settings increase monster life and experience and reduce ordinary no-drop outcomes.

Base monster life and experience increase by +50% for every 1 additional player, so the 8-player setting gives 4.5 times the 1-player values. Kills take longer and some combat stats also increase. Compare results per hour rather than assuming that drops increase 8 times.

Base monster life and experience multipliers by player setting
Player settingMultiplier compared with 1 player
11×
32×
53×
74×
84.5×

These are base monster adjustments. Experience actually received also depends on character level, monster level, high-level penalties and other factors.

Neither the number of item drops nor the chance of a particular item increases by this multiplier.

Odd and even player settings and item drops

Ordinary NoDrop adjustments generally use the same groups for settings 1·2 / 3·4 / 5·6 / 7·8.

Even settings increase monster Life and experience further but often give no additional ordinary-drop benefit. For drops, compare 3·5·7; for experience, compare the highest setting that preserves clear speed. Special checks such as Herald drops are separate.

When a player-count change takes effect

Changing the player setting does not recalculate the Life or experience of monsters that have already spawned.

Set the desired value before approaching the farming area. Chests and other objects can check conditions at different times from monsters, so do not apply a spawn-time rule to every drop source.

Choosing player settings for offline boss farming

Start by comparing a setting of 3 for bosses such as Andariel and Mephisto, and up to 3 for Baal; lower it to 1 if kills are slow.

For Baal in particular, ordinary-drop NoDrop benefits are almost exhausted at 3 players. If clear speed holds up, compare 5 and 7 for other bosses, but evaluate special Terror Zone or Herald drops and experience goals separately.

Choosing player settings for offline Countess rune farming

Use a setting of 1 as the default for the Countess's special rune drops.

Higher settings can let ordinary items fill drop slots first, leaving fewer slots for special runes. Distinguish key or experience farming from the 1-player setting used for rune farming.

When offline maps are retained or reset

Offline maps persist when the same character re-enters the same difficulty.

Creating a game in another difficulty can reroll the previous difficulty's map as well. Merely adjusting the player setting or changing Terror Zones does not reset the map.

Rerolling an offline map

Create a game in another difficulty, then return to the original difficulty to roll a new map.

This method is unavailable until another difficulty has been unlocked. After finding a good farming map, check the character-selection screen to avoid accidentally changing difficulty.

Waypoint access after resetting maps

Rerolling a map preserves activated waypoints and completed quests.

It changes the map layout and explored map information rather than resetting character progression. The waypoint's physical position changes to match the new layout.

Choosing offline maps for repeated farming

Choose a map with nearby waypoints, entrances and targets to shorten each run.

For Mephisto, check the distance from the Durance of Hate Level 2 waypoint to the Level 3 entrance; for Andariel, check the Catacombs route. In Lower Kurast, a layout with two campfires and 6 superchests near the waypoint is desirable.

Farming Lower Kurast chests offline

Quickly open the 6 superchests around the campfires in Hell Lower Kurast at a player setting of 7.

Each campfire has 3 chests, so choose a map where both campfires are nearby. The ordinary non-terrorized chests can drop up to Ber and are unaffected by Magic Find. Focus on Teleport, Faster Cast Rate and a repeatable route.

Farming specific bases from offline racks

Repeatedly check weapon and armor racks on a persistent map to target a particular base.

The approach direction, nearby monsters and other factors can change a rack's result, so the same item is not guaranteed 100% of the time. Record racks that repeatedly show the desired base and the route used to approach them.

Summoning Uber Diablo offline

Sell 1 Stone of Jordan to a vendor in an offline Hell game to summon Diablo Clone.

The sold ring is consumed, so prepare for the fight and choose a spawn location first. Then travel to a superunique location that has not yet spawned and defeat Diablo Clone to obtain Annihilus.

Preparing for the Pandemonium Event offline

Resurrected offline play supports the Hellfire Torch quest through the key and organ recipes.

You must defeat every boss alone, so prepare high resistances, Crushing Blow, Life Tap, Open Wounds and other survival or regeneration-control tools. Open all 3 mini-Uber portals in the same game and bring plenty of Rejuvenation Potions.

Installing and running offline mods

Install PC offline mods according to their author's instructions for the current patch.

For D2RMM, set the game path in the manager, install and enable the mods, then launch as instructed. Manual mods may use separate launch arguments such as -mod modname -txt, so first check the mod save folder and back up the original files.

Compatibility between modded characters and the base game

Saves containing mod-only items or expanded data may not open directly in the unmodified game.

Before removing a mod or changing versions, check the author's migration instructions. You may need to remove added items. Even when moving the same character, also inspect the Shared Stash for mod data.
